LatAm Energy Corner - Unlocking Argentina's LNG potential

Welcome to the third edition of our LatAm Energy Corner, a quarterly update on the intricate energy dynamics shaping Latin America. Our focus in this edition lands back on Argentina. Traditionally, Argentina has produced conventional gas, but now unconventional gas is making significant strides, particularly from the Vaca Muerta in the Neuquen region. The country has enough reserves to supply the local demand for over 100 years. Upstream companies in Argentina are convinced that a new consumer market must develop to continue increasing production, which will be done through exports. Multiple projects and ambitions are underway to unlock Argentina's potential to become a leading player in global LNG exports.

We are delighted to have Vinicius Romano, Vice President of Gas Markets Research for Latin America, as our expert for this edition. He joined Rystad Energy in 2022 after 5 years of experience in the Brazilian oil & gas and energy sector working for Comgas, carrying out analysis in procurement, market intelligence, gas operation, industry relationships, new business development and the regulation sector. In addition, he is active in the research and development of modern data-scientific forecasting methods. Vinicius holds a Bachelor in Energy Engineering from the Federal University of ABC (UFABC) in Sao Paulo - Brazil.

Today, the US is the largest LNG exporter in the world and one of the countries with the most new LNG projects. Being competitive with the US market is key to this opportunity in Argentina. When we evaluate the upstream production costs in Argentina, we understand that productivity and breakeven costs are quite comparable with those of the US's most premium resources.
