The Twin Challenge Happy new year! As we enter into 2022, few are in doubt that the energy transition is gaining momentum. The COP26 ambition is to transform today’s $86 trillion dollar world economy that gets 80% of its energy from fossil fuels, to a $170 trillion dollar net-carbon free world economy in 2050. As we have argued before: This is a very tall order, but it is possible. Energy poverty is seldom brought to the forefront of the discussion. And this is so despite the fact that the 7th of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals reads: “Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all”. In 2019, there were still 750 million people without access to electricity and an estimated 4 million premature deaths each year due to energy poverty. Can we maintain the speed of the energy transition while at the same time tackling the challenge of energy poverty? This will be the vital theme of this year’s first edition of Rystad Talks Energy. We truly hope you will connect for discussions with distinguished external guests on this important topic. We are also thrilled to launch the new monthly webinar series “Rystad Talks Industry”, this time focusing on the fast-growing EV market, reaching 13% of global new sales of cars in December 2022. Please join us to get updates first-hand from Rystad Energy’s own specialists. I also look forward to engage in conversations with executives from up-and-coming EV producers NIO and Polestar, as well as from Audi, which is quickly transitioning to become a pure-play EV producer as well. At Rystad Energy, we continue to analyze and monitor all sectors and aspects related to energy. Please connect and stay tuned as we embark on a new and promising 2022. |
