Can Africa secure the energy supply to Europe?

The discourse on Energy Transition became even more interesting at the onset of the Russian - Ukraine war. Europe had a sudden clear case of how much still needs to be done to achieve a carbon-neutral stance and less reliance on hydrocarbon supply from Russia.

The question is – will Europe look over to Africa for the security of supply? Italy, in association with ENI has had a couple of roadshows in Africa, ensuring the security of gas supply from Algeria, Nigeria, Egypt, Angola, and Congo – Brazzaville. Also, several previously delayed gas projects are now progressing such as the Mozambique LNG projects.

Africa – a hydrocarbon-laden continent with infrastructural challenges has experienced several onshore exits by Majors/IOCs in recent times, in countries such as Nigeria. Examples are Exxon Mobil and Shell. This is a wake-up call for indigenous players to get booked and busy!

It is time for Africa to realize and harness her full resource-rich potential, whilst mapping out a just Energy Transition supported by sustainable investment.

Gas starved Europe looks to Africa for new supplies as E&Ps reconsider shelved projects

Africa is conservatively forecast to reach peak gas production at 470 billion cubic meters (Bcm) by the late 2030s, equivalent to about 75% of the expected amount of gas produced by Russia in 2022, according to Rystad Energy research. In early March, the European Union announced it aims to reduce its dependence on Russian gas by two-thirds by the end of this year alone and is currently headed for a supply crunch that will reverberate around the globe.

Can Algeria and Egypt rise to challenge of plugging Europe's gas supply gap?

Algeria and Egypt could help Europe partially plug a gas supply gap left as the continent turns its back on Russian supplies amid the invasion of Ukraine. Italian major Eni recently struck a pair of deals in the two North African nations covering the import of both pipeline and shipped volumes. The North African region appears potentially well placed to help European countries replace some Russian volumes as it benefits from existing gas infrastructure and close historical relations with Europe, including Italy.
