| Upstream Australian upstream industry books $18 billion of asset write-downs for 2020 Krishan Pal Birda, Analyst, Upstream Research How resilient are the key E&P companies in Australia that are moving forward with large-scale project developments in the region? Operators with assets across Australia have booked an estimated $18 billion (A$23 billion) in pre-tax impairments for last year following the oil price crash, of which $7 billion stemmed from companies based in Australia. Rystad Energy analyzed the resilience of Australian portfolios, looking closely at the break-even price of assets in the discovery phase – a key factor to understand which companies may be best positioned to continue investments in an upstream industry now defined by oil price volatility. | | | Energy Service Nippon Steel pipeline closure plan sends E&P clients scrambling for supply James Ley, Senior VP, Energy Service Research Nippon Steel has decided to close its only remaining large-diameter longitudinal (LSAW) linepipe mill by the end of the year, sending its clients in the oil and gas industry on a hunt for alternative suppliers. The decision means that more than 1 million tonnes of LSAW pipe capacity will have been removed from the Japanese steel industry in just a few years, as rival steelmaker JFE has also closed a mill in the past decade and will have the only LSAW pipe mill left in Japan. As spot market revenue provides insight into the supply demand balance, Rystad Energy expects some regions might need to roll with the punches. | | |

| Markets Gas Market Regional Report - India Kaushal Ramesh, Analyst, Gas and Power Markets Research Despite India’s history of gas shortages and lower than average gas consumption, the government has now signaled it plans to prioritize the sector. Backed by the push to a gas based economy, we expect gas demand will increase from 64 billion cubic meters (Bcm) in 2020 to 105 Bcm in 2030 and to 147 Bcm in 2040, driven by increases in the power, fertilizer, industrial, and transportation sectors. | | | Renewables Australian generators set for tough year amid new spot revenue lows David Dixon, Senior Analyst, Australian Renewables Research Generators in Australia’s National Electricity Market (NEM) are set for a challenging 2021 as 5.8 gigawatts (GWAC) of wind and solar PV supply – at various stages of construction and commissioning – awaits the market, creating new lows for spot revenues. NEM spot revenue fell to A$10 billion in 2020, from A$17.5 billion in 2019, as electricity demand decreased, gas prices slid, and 4.4 GWAC of wind and solar PV capacity was energized. | | |
