U.S. Shale activity has been going through a multi-year period of experiments with dense well spacing. In mature liquid play, Eagle Ford, the share of <400 feet spacing increased from 23% in 2012 to 58% in 2016. Yet we have seen that some operators went too far in their attempts to space laterals close to each other. Since 2016 significant number of infill wells have achieved disappointing well results struggling to repeat record productivity levels achieved by parent wells in the same leases. As of 2017-2018, down-spacing trends reverted and some operators reduced their target number of wells per spacing unit.
