The story behind the numbers

"Every rally, every serve and every sprint on court is a transfer of energy. Converting that into something people recognise, like homes powered, helps illustrate the scale of energy in everyday life."
Carlos Diaz, Director Power Research and Tennis Enthusiast

How we calculated it

Behind every headline statistic is a transparent methodology. By combining tournament data, player performance metrics and energy conversion calculations, we translated Wimbledon activity into real-world energy equivalents.

Player Energy

To estimate the energy generated by players throughout Wimbledon, we used the projected number of matches, average match duration and a standard calorie burn rate for elite tennis players. Based on 650 matches, an average duration of 100 minutes and a burn rate of 14 calories per minute, players are expected to burn approximately 1.82 million calories across the tournament. This was then converted into kilowatt-hours to determine the equivalent number of London homes that could be powered for a day.

Ball Strike Energy

To calculate the energy generated by the tennis ball, we estimated the total number of ball strikes across the tournament and applied the kinetic energy formula using official ball specifications and average shot speeds. Assuming approximately 624,000 ball strikes, an average serve speed of 180 km/h, an average rally speed of 120 km/h and a regulation ball weight of 57 grams, we calculated the total kinetic energy transferred during play.
