When sport meets energy: The power potential of Wimbledon

Understanding energy through Wimbledon

Wimbledon players will burn approximately 2 million calories this year. That's enough energy to power 212 London homes for a day or brew 73,000 cups of tea.
Discover the energy behind every match, rally and serve.

Over two weeks, the world's best players compete across hundreds of matches, creating countless moments of athletic performance and energy expenditure.

Every sprint, serve and rally requires energy. Collectively, players are expected to burn nearly two million calories throughout the tournament.

From blistering serves to baseline exchanges, each strike transfers energy to the ball, adding up to more than half a million impacts across Wimbledon.

When converted into electrical energy equivalents, the calories burned by players throughout the tournament could power approximately 212 average London homes for an entire day.

The same amount of energy could brew approximately 73,000 cups of tea, enough to keep Wimbledon spectators refreshed throughout the tournament.

The story behind the numbers

"Every rally, every serve and every sprint on court is a transfer of energy. Converting that into something people recognise, such as homes powered or cups of tea brewed, helps illustrate the scale of energy in everyday life."
Carlos Diaz, Director Power Research and tennis enthusiast

How we calculated it

Behind every headline statistic is a transparent methodology

By combining tournament data, player performance metrics and energy conversion calculations, we translated Wimbledon activity into real-world energy equivalents.

Player energy

To estimate the energy generated by players throughout Wimbledon, we used the projected number of matches, average match duration and a standard calorie burn rate for elite tennis players. Based on 650 matches, an average duration of 100 minutes and a burn rate of 14 calories per minute, players are expected to burn approximately 1.82 million calories across the tournament.

Ball strike energy

To calculate the energy generated by the tennis ball, we estimated the total number of ball strikes across the tournament and applied the kinetic energy formula using official ball specifications and average shot speeds.

Why it matters

From tennis courts to global energy systems, meaningful decisions start with a clear understanding of energy. The same analytical rigor used in this Wimbledon analysis is applied every day to help organizations navigate increasingly complex energy markets. Whether you're evaluating market opportunities, tracking emerging technologies or planning for the energy transition, Rystad Energy delivers the independent data and insights needed to move forward with confidence.
