Global Energy Scenarios 2026: Pathways to resilience

Rystad Energy’s fifth edition of its flagship annual report, Global Energy Scenarios (GES) 2026, finds that global reliance on imported energy is projected to peak by 2034 as energy security concerns accelerate the shift towards electrification. Against the backdrop of two major energy crises in five years, the report highlights how a broader range of rapidly deployable technologies is helping the energy system withstand major disruptions to energy flows. It explores how energy import dependency could evolve under three possible future scenarios, each reflecting a different pace of change.

US executive order targets Chinese grid hardware, but battery storage serving AI data centers is more exposed

A White House executive order designed to secure the US power grid from Chinese-made equipment is more likely to disrupt battery storage supply chains than the transformers and switchgear it aims to target, according to new Rystad Energy analysis. Executive Order 14421, signed by President Donald Trump on 26 August 2026, names substation transformers, grid-connected inverters, battery energy storage systems, high-voltage circuit breakers and generation turbines as covered equipment.

Southeast Asia's upstream M&A activity shifts from exits to strategic entry with $9.6 billion on offer

The massive data center capacity scale-up under way has focused attention on the scale of water required for these facilities to operate. Rystad Energy estimates that without water-saving measures in place, global water consumption by data centers could rise to 644 billion liters per year by 2030.

Venezuela’s oil sector comeback accelerated by majors and newcomers

Venezuela’s upstream oil sector is attracting its broadest pool of international operators and capital in decades, with established majors expanding their footprints and new operators entering under revised contractual frameworks. If capital deployment, rig availability and oilfield services scale in line with requirements, Rystad Energy models Venezuelan crude production reaching around 1.6 million barrels per day (bpd) by 2028 and 1.8 million bpd by 2030.

Out of room: Russia's crude production enters a new era of constraint

Following a year of tighter sanctions and Ukrainian attacks on refineries, ports and tankers, Russia’s crude output has fallen further in the second half of 2026, severely affecting the nation’s crude production outlook. Factoring in these disruptions, Rystad Energy has revised its Russian crude production forecast to average 8.95 million bpd in 2026.

China bets on synthetic gas as geopolitical risk drives need for energy security

As nations race to cut import exposure to geopolitical tensions, China is building the world’s only large-scale coal-to-gas (CTG) industry as a strategic buffer against supply shocks. No other country has developed synthetic gas from coal at any meaningful scale. China’s 15th Five-Year Plan, covering 2026 to 2030, strengthens CTG’s role in its domestic supply architecture, signaling a move from consideration to active execution. Rystad Energy estimates China’s CTG capacity is on track to reach 9.4 billion cubic meters (Bcm) per year by end-2026, growing to 28 Bcm per year by 2030 — the equivalent of more than four times Austria’s entire coal-produced annual gas demand.

Fuel cell investment by data centers set to grow tenfold, reaching $30 billion by 2030

Data center developers are scrambling for reliable power, turning away from congested grids and toward on-site fuel cells. Rystad Energy research and analysis projects a tenfold increase in fuel cell market revenues by 2030, rising from around $2.8 billion in 2025 to roughly $30 billion, as AI computing demand drives unprecedented growth in data center construction. A contracted order book of approximately 9 gigawatts (GW), including framework agreements with Oracle, AEP, Equinix, and Brookfield, points to growing confidence among major operators in fuel cells as a viable long-term power source.

Asia's coal demand to rise by 100 million tonnes in wake of Middle East conflict

The Middle East conflict has dealt a lasting blow to Gulf energy infrastructure, causing billions of dollars in damage and catapulting energy security to the top of the global agenda. Rystad Energy's research shows the fallout is driving a significant near-term surge in Asia-Pacific (APAC) thermal coal demand, with an additional 150 million tonnes (Mt) of cumulative consumption projected through 2030, roughly half of which is expected to land in 2026 alone. The driver is not a policy reversal but a supply gap, with a liquefied natural gas shortfall of 35 Mt estimated this year.. This is forcing gas-dependent utilities to run existing coal capacity harder, backed by regulatory cap removals across Northeast Asia.
